Distinguished Lecture Series in Computer Science

We are pleased to announce that the 2011 Distinguished Lecturer in Computer Science is Dr. Leslie Valiant. Dr. Valiant is the T. Jefferson Coolidge Professor of Computer Science and Applied Mathematics at Harvard University and the recipient of the 2010 Association for Computing Machinery A.M. Turing Award. The lectures are scheduled for Oct. 24, 2011. Details can be found on the lecture series poster and brochure.

NEW - 5 Year BS & MSE Track

The BS/MSE program allows students to receive both an undergraduate Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science and a Master Degree in Software Engineering. The combined program can be completed in 5 years where the MSE is normally requires 2 years after a bachelors degree is completed. Further information can be found in BS & MSE - Dual Degree.

National Science Foundation Undergraduate S-STEM Award

The UW - La Crosse Computer Science Department and the Electronic and Computer Engineering Technology Program at Western Technical College has been awarded a National Science foundation grant ($597,000 over 5 years) in the S-STEM program.

The Computer Science department is currently conducting searches for a tenure-track faculty position and an instructional academic staff lecturer position. The start date for both positions is fall 2012 but a start date in Jan 2012 is also possible. National Science Foundation Graduate S-STEM Award

The Computer Science Department at the University of Wisconsin - La Crosse has been awarded a National Science Foundation S-STEM grant of $526,000 to support scholarships for full-time students studying in the MSE program.

Employment Outlook

The U.S. Department of Labor reports in its Occupational Outlook Handbook 2008-09 Edition, which covers the 2006-2016 decade, that Computer Software Engineers will remain in high demand. The most recent report says

"Job prospects should be excellent, as computer software engineers are expected to be among the fastest-growing occupations through the year 2016."

"Employment of computer software engineers is projected to increase by 38 percent over the 2006-2016 period, which is much faster than the average for all occupations."

"According to Robert Half technology, starting salaries for software engineers in software development ranged from $66,500 to $99.750 in 2007."
